Key decisions to be made on Ilfracombe sea front scheme

THE regeneration plan for Ilfracombe sea front will take a step
forward next week when the Executive of North Devon Council will be
recommended to plough a provisional £1.5 million into phase
one of the project.
At the same time, the meeting on Tuesday will be asked to delete
the Ilfracombe Harbour project from its programme to release funds
to enable the sea front plan to go ahead.
The go-ahead for the £4 million scheme will depend on funds
being allocated by a number of other agencies.
It would provide a new cultural centre linking Ilfracombe Museum
and the Landmark Theatre.
This building, which would be partly underground, would provide
a number of facilities, including an expanded and refurbished
museum space, education space and state-of-the-art education
area.
There would be a green amphitheatre and external performance
area, along with a pedestrian footbridge linking the Jubilee and
Runnymede Gardens.
The project would include an eyecatching public art feature,
interactive exhibits and a "hidden courtyard" as part of the
enhanced museum.
Much depends on a £1 million contribution from the CABE Sea
Change organisation, expected by the end of this month.
The Executive will be asked to take a risk and appoint Chapman
Workhouse to proceed with the design at a cost of
£120,500.
